Magnet Technologies developed Utkarsh, an open-source operating system for Gujarati, a regional language in India spoken by much of the country's business class.
The OS is bundled with a dictionary, lexicon, localized open office software, and keyboard, and sells for between $45 and $145, depending on where the buyer is located. Other products include SendMax, a bulk mailing program and Bee-hive , a web-based content management system and SMS archive, which helps store and search messages received on your mobile phone. But unless the OS is extended to other languages, which analysts says is not dificult. Magnet will remain a niche player. |

Then there is the case of another Mumbai-based netizen Nirav Mehta, the brain behind Magnet Technologies and Magnet e-zine, India's first Internet magazine which started with four computers and as many employees.
Magnet's initial orders came from acquaintances and word-of-mouth publicity but in time the company bagged KPMG India's account and soon spread its wings beyond national boundaries. Today it is doing business in million of dollars with two products - Beehive for content management and WebRover as a search engine - raking in profits.
"Magnet has grown out of a small venture of college friends to a company aiming high, a company that will change the world," says Nirav, Magnet's chairmain and chief mentor. Incidentally, Nirav won Microsoft's 'Imagine the Magic' competition and met Bill Gates. |
